The Global Influence

by Josephine

The strongest influence for Spring 2005 is the global influence. Ethnic influences from Africa, Morocco, Caribbean, Mexico and Bali coming through in a major way this season showing off their prints and patterns in ready to wear.

Overwhelming color and trend in the women’s market has given us the confidence to experiment allowing for this look to come through with the mixing of prints and patterns. Clashing even!

Decoration is still important. Sequins and beads are still being shown on top of simple solids forming a pattern themselves as well as on top of prints giving this look another dimension.

Nature is another of this season’s influences. Floral patterns continue. Feathers become a very important type of accessory or decoration as well as birds. Bird shapes printed or appliquéd on tops and even bird brooches. The use of natural materials, such as Coral and Turquoise, returns. Crochet details are still very important as well.

Some things to note about silhouettes for this season are;
Skirts and tops become fuller. Try a Grecian influenced flowing jersey top with a batwing sleeve, or a non structured smock top with a folkloric feel.

Pants are getting either much fuller (harem pant or wide cropped leg) or narrower like the stovepipe. My favorite version is the tailored short. This is the narrow legged short that hits just above the knee.

The cropped jacket and blazer are key outerwear pieces. The trench is the only one to have in a longer length.

The dress returns in ladylike prints.

Items with overall prints and patterns are usually kept in more simple styles.
