Chicano Visions: American Painters on the Verge

Chicano
Visions: American Painters on the Verge
October 2- January 2, 2005
This show is one of the first comprehensive exhibits to travel around the country and expose museum goers to contemporary Chicano painting. Most of the work in the show is taken directly from the collection of Cheech Marin (yes, of Cheech and Chong). Marin is the foremost collector of Chicano art and it’s strongest proponent. Many of the artists featured in the exhibit began as muralists and graffiti painters on the streets of LA, San Francisco, San Antonio and South Texas. As they were recognized for their vision and influence, these artists were taken from the streets and given representation in major museums and collections.

Twenty-six artists are featured in the exhibition including Carmen Lomas Garza, Gronk, and Carlos Almaraz.
