Northeast Minneapolis is an area that even the original northeasters say is a growing artist community quickly becoming the Uptown of the past. Rents in South Minneapolis neighborhoods went up and northeast became a mecca for students, artists, and young families. The atmosphere changed and bars with the feel of the Uptown Bar and Lee’s Liquor Lounge back in the day started popping up everywhere.

The locals who graduated from Edison high school and had haunted placed like Jimmy’s Bar and Jax Café for decades are now sharing their favorite social spots with kids their grandchildren’s age. Having grown up there, I can safely say that these changes are pretty recent, all happening in the last decade. When I was six years old there was no Modern with half price wine night, no one but my neighbors knew the name Central Avenue and there certainly was no Psycho Suzi’s

Psycho Suzi’s is a tiki style bar and restaurant offering cheap food, great happy hour specials and a patio that will draw you to this hang. Anyone in Minnesota likes a patio, making it an easy sell, and if you are not into a smoky atmosphere then this is the best place to sit. We will see what the new smoking ban does for changes this spring but until then, wary non-smokers might want to spend the colder months elsewhere. The tiki torches give a surreal feeling when added to the rough around the edges interior. This is definitely a place that is perfect for live music, having the look of places that might have housed the discovery of Soul Asylum or The Red Hot Chili Peppers.

The drinks are varied from just plain beer to just plain silly. Choose a fluffed up flaming cocktail if you want a show or come on a Sunday night and get a can of Schmidt beer for $1.25. Are you into whiskey? It’s half price on Thursday nights! Can’t decide but want a deal? Then Monday is your night because it is two for one.

Replacing frills with tikis, providing a completely relaxed atmosphere and charging original northeast prices is what will make this spot a success. It will not fit your mood every day of the week but Psycho Suzi’s has found the right home on the end of Marshall Street and you will find it home yourself if you fancy not being fancy.
