Not Just Leg Warmers

by Keith Dorsett

Here we are, a new season is upon us and there is sure to be an awakening of the senses for those of us living in colder climates. The clothing of Fall/Winter is starting to lose its luster. It’s time for something new, so start by investing in the one item that you can surely put your foot through, the pant.

Spring/Summer 2004 offers a fabulous selection of styles to choose from. The flat front style remains a must have, it is very clean and is offered in fabrics that drape for that leg lengthening affect. For those that prefer pleats, try the styles of the Great Gatsby film, pants worn inches below the navel with fuller legs and a wider cuff. Fabrics have been carefully selected and range from synthetics for active dress pants to blends of cotton/silk, to wool and wool/poly blends.

The common denominator this season is white, be it jeans, sportswear or dress. Denim is also in the mix with very interesting washes of shaded light blue. Try a boot cut, not too loose in the seat, worn with a lightweight western shirt and a pair of sandals for that cowboy chic look. As stated before, the flat front is recommended and can transition from workday to evening quite easily. It can be very flattering for those that are a little thick through the waist, no cuffs please. If pleated pants are worn they are generally cuffed. For those 5' 8" or taller try a 2" cuff, if the hem is tapered, less than 15" around, try a plain hem or if cuffs are preferred hem the pants 1/8" above the shoe heel line.

Fashionistas! You have not been forgotten, there is a plethora of rock star pants with diagonally placed zippers, belts on the legs and prints in stripes or floral. If pants are in European sizes subtract 16 for the American conversion. For example, size 48 European converts to a size 32 American.

Pants are an essential part of our everyday wardrobe and this season pants offer great style. Treat yourself!
